Save Our Salford

With regards to our great City of Salford, the proposals put forward by the Boundary Commission for England are outrageous. We need to retain our two constituencies so that we do not have a limited voice in parliament. I do not want Salford to lose its identity as a city, with the core such as Salford Cathedral; Salford University; Salford Royal Foundation Hospital Trust; Shopping City and the Quays going into a Manchester parliamentary constituency.

I have signed the council petition and voted for the council resolution opposing these proposals;posted my objections on the commission website; joined the facebook group (Save Our Salford) and sent a letter of protest to the commission.

Traffic Calming - Seedley Park Road and Seedley Terrace

I am pleased to announce that Labour have listened and responded to concerns raised by residents at both the Ordsall and Langworthy Community Committee and the Seedley and Langworthy Forum in relation to the problem of speeding vehicles.

A traffic calming scheme will be introduced along Seedley Terrace and additional measures will be installed on Seedley Park Road.

Launch of No Cold Calling Zone

I was delighted to attend Beech Court on Monday 12th September for the launch of the No Cold Calling Zone. This gave me the opportunity to congratulate everyone involved for their hard work.

This initiative which will increase community safety has been driven by Graham Worrell(Secretary of Beech Court TARA) and local residents with support from the police, Salix Homes and the council.
The zone includes Hornbeam Court,Salix Court,Malus Court and Lombardy Court.

Post Salford Riots

What an incredible few weeks it has been but Langworthy residents have proven how resilient and strong they are as a community. Just days after the riots on August 13th they were refusing to have their lives disrupted and came out to enjoy themselves at Salford Saturday on Chimney Pot Park. It was great to see people of all ages participating in the activities; especially the children on the popular climbing wall.

A week on from August 9th and I was given the opportunity to comment on the riots and its effect on local residents and businesses in Salford on 'Beswick at Breakfast'.

Riots in Langworthy ward

I am appalled by the behaviour of the groups of youths involved in the riots in the Pendleton and Seedley areas of Salford last night. These youths have shown they have no respect for their community whatsoever.

It is good to hear that tough action will be taken against the perpetrators of these crimes.

Today it has been heartwarming to see that there are residents who want to show their respect and pride in Salford by helping to clear up the damage. They have been out and about with Cllr Warmisham and myself plus councillors from other wards and senior council officers and partners such as Salix Homes and SALT.

I would like to thank everyone who turned out in Langworthy ward today for all their hard work and support.

Pendleton PFI Scheme

I am delighted that the Pendleton PFI Scheme has finally been approved by the coalition government but am frustrated by the delayed timescale.

This project should have been given the go ahead last October after the Comprehensive Spending Review but the government's insistence on re-submitting the value for money assessment has delayed the project by 12 to 18 months. Lets now get on with the job of creating a new, improved Pendleton.

Gypsy/Roma/Traveller Event - Sat 18th June 2011

Cllr Warmisham and I thoroughly enjoyed attending the Irish Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill which hosted an event showing the partnership working between the Gypsy/Roma/Traveller communities, the council, NHS and police. Young talent was also showcased on stage. I came away with a greater knowlegde of these communities and their culture.

Willow Tree Primary School official opening

Shadow Secretary for Education Andy Burnham officially opened Langworthy Wards Willow Tree Primary School.
The school – which has been open since September 2010 – is a state-of-the art facility including a market garden, integrated wi-fi, woodland and wildlife centre and even a pond.
The school has been built to replace Langworthy Road, Tootal Drive and Seedley Primary Schools.
However, the old schools from which the pupils have come have not been forgotten, with tributes such as a stained glass window from Langworthy Road Primary School being found within the building.
SalfordOnline spoke to some of the (very polite and well-mannered) schoolchildren who attend the school to find out what they like about their new building.
Mr Burnham said “Willow Tree is a great example of how a new school can quickly become integrated in the local community. The facilities it offers to children living in this part of Salford are excellent, combining advanced technology with outdoor learning. It is an honour to be invited along to officially open the school and see the benefits it has brought for local children.”
Councillor John Merry CBE, Leader of Salford City Council, said: “As we approach the end of the school’s first year, it is plain to see that this school is really enhancing this community, giving the children access to a whole host of facilities and opportunities that will give them a quality education and will really set them up for the rest of their lives.
“We only have to look along the road from this school to see what is possible for children in Salford. MediaCityUK has brought a whole host of new opportunities to the city and these children will be able to benefit from this in the future. Getting a good education at Willow Tree is just the start.”
Ros Munro, Head Teacher at Willow Tree, commented: “From the first day of opening, the children have always shown an enormous amount of pride in their school.
“The outside learning spaces form a major part of school. This is particularly important as many children do not have access to outside spaces in their homes.
“One of the most exciting things to happen this year was when two mallard ducks nested in the pond. We now have a family of four ducks living on the pond and students love feeding the ducks everyday.”
Thanks to Salfordonline for story.

Seedley Terrace road resurfacing.

Gina Loveday on the newly re-surfaced road on Seedley Terrace.
It was a pleasure this evening to be out campaigning around the Buille Hill Park area. Very positive support on Seedley Terrace. People were really pleased that the Labour Council had invested on having their road resurfaced.
If re-elected I will continue to fight for finances for further road works in Langworthy Ward even though it will be very difficult due to horrific cuts forced on Salford Council by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government.

It was also very amusing when a resident in the area showed us the Liberal Democrat Focus leaflet and said "have you ever seen anything so cheap and nasty".
I couldn't possibly comment!

Salford Online Q & A

The local news website Salford Online asked all candidates in the local elections the following questions. I thought I'd share my responses with you.

1. Why have you decided to stand?

I wish to stand in Langworthy ward in order to continue representing the people in this community. I feel passionately about helping to improve the lives of Salford residents. I want to ensure I make a difference by having an influence in policy making and playing my part in delivering quality services for the people of Salford, despite the savage and unfair cuts imposed by this coalition government.

2. What do you see as the main problems affecting your area?
The main problems in the ward are anti-social behaviour, in particular noise nuisance and vandalism; environmental issues such as fly-tipping and concerns that the regeneration of Langworthy will not be completed.

3. How would you go about solving those problems?
In relation to anti-social behaviour, partnership working is crucial. I will continue to engage with the police, community and other partners through the Neighbourhood Partnership Board, Community Committee and ‘BEAT’ meetings across the ward in order to tackle this problem . In this present climate of police cuts we need to ensure that the neighbourhood police officers are retained.

With regards to fly-tipping, I will continue to work with the council, residents and other partners such as Salix Homes to ensure a cleaner environment for everyone. I liaise regularly with the co-located team who target hotspots in the ward on a weekly basis. I also want to ensure we continue with the ‘SNAP’ weeks which have been very successful across the city at reducing crime and improving the environment.

Regeneration continues to be a challenge and is paramount for a sustainable community. I have been working with residents and partners on the Pendleton Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Steering Group for the past few years. The previous Labour Government had approved credits of £121 million to provide residents with high standard housing of their choice and a much improved environment. At present the coalition government is conducting a value for money assessment and we are awaiting their response before approval. I am ensuring pressure is put on the government to approve this project. I have also been working with Salix Homes, residents and other partners such as the Seedley and Langworthy Trust (SALT) on the Neighbourhood Blueprint Panels to identify priorities based on need in order to continue to deliver physical and social regeneration in the area.

Salford Tories told to go back to school.

Salford Tories have been told they need to go back to school after their leaflet  proclaiming six reasons not to vote Labour was given a zero grade by those in the know.

The following claims have been roundly dismissed:

CLAIM 1: The Council has written of £8 million debt.

TRUTH: This is money that the Council will try to collect but is finding it hard to do so – sometimes because the person owing money has died. All the Council has done is to make an accounting change so the books don’t show the money coming in this year. The Council shouldn’t pla n to spend money it can’t rely on coming in! The Tory chair of the Council’s audit committee said there was nothing wrong with these decisions.

CLAIM 2: The Council borrowed £17m to build a community stadium.

TRUTH: The Council borrowed the money but this will not affect Council taxpayers. The money will be paid back by the company which will run the stadium. Getting investment for a prestige public facility and having someone else pay sounds  like a reason to vote Labour.

CLAIM 3: The Council paid for a lease which it owns

TRUTH:  Completely wrong! The Council bought back a lease so it would own the freehold. This  will increase  the value of the land and  get a better deal for Council taxpayers when it is sold on. Another reason to vote Labour.

CLAIM 4: Car parking charges were introduced without consultation

TRUTH: The car parking charges have not yet been introduced.  Why? Because the formal consultation is taking place.

CLAIM 5: The council reduced Chapel Street to one lane

TRUTH: Chapel Street will have two lanes. It is one lane during roadworks. The work is being paid for by Europe and the Development Agency. It will lead to new jobs, new homes, new businesses and a better environment.

CLAIM 6: The Council gave planning permission for schools with no access.

TRUTH: A complete fiction! By law the Council has to decide at least whether a development is acceptable in principle and whether access is possible when considering giving ‘outline permission’.  The Council did this. Sometimes the Council has asked applicants if they can find a better access before seeking ‘detailed permission’. A sensible approach.

Campaigning.

The Labour Party Candidate Gina Loveday out leafleting on Citrus Way

It's been a fantastic week to go out campaigning in the sunshine this week. Lots of positive response on the doorstep when we've been out canvassing and as always I've picked up a number of cases which I'm dealing with for people. Indeed today I picked up the issue of the Paddock Pub, which was supposed to be developed a couple of years ago, but the developer went into liquidation. The property has now changed hands a number of times and there seems to be no future plans. I will be chasing this up again on Tuesday to get the latest position and get back to those residents that raised it with me.

I've now started delivering my election address right across Langworthy Ward letting people know what I and the Salford Labour Party stand for. I hope people will take time to read it and consider voting for me.

It is only a Labour Council and councillors that can deliver in Salford and in Langworthy Ward. We've seen how the Liberal Democrats behave doing u turn after u turn to support and prop up the Conservative Government. Indeed things aren't much different on Salford City Council. The Salford Liberal Democrats more often than not support the Conservative Party. As Cllr Warmisham often says the Salford Lib Dems are just the rump of the Salford Tory Party !

Vote Lib Dem get Conservative.

Pendleton PFI

I have very grave concerns at present as we wait for the Homes and Communities Agency to report back to the minister after asking for further efficiencies to be made regarding the Pendleton PFI Project.

Welcome to Gina's Blog

Hi,

My name is Gina Loveday and I am standing as the Labour Candidate in Langworthy Ward because I feel passionately about helping to improve the lives of the people in this community. I want to ensure I make a difference by having an influence in policy making and playing my part in delivering quality services for the people of Salford, despite the savage and unfair cuts imposed by this Coalition Government.
